CELEBRATING THE BODY-BEYOND THEIR WORDS
October 02nd, 2011 - November 02nd, 2011
Opening : October 02nd, 2011 at 07.00 Pm
Gaya Art Space is proudly presents group exhibition of Fighting Cocks Group “CELEBRATING THE BODY” collaborate with “BEYOND THE WORDS” by Beatriz Mousinho at Gaya Art Space on October 02nd until November 02nd, 2011. Fighting Cocks Group Yogyakarta (Kelompok Jago Tarung) established on June 27, 2010 in Yogyakarta. The member consists of four artists alumni of Indonesia Art Institute (ISI) Yogyakarta ; Multazam 'Zam' Kamil, Moch Basori, Nurul 'Acil' Hayat and Priyaris Munandar. Although newly formed, but the member of Fighting Cocks Group had long involved in the field of contemporary art. They are known as multidisciplinary artists with their uniqueness. Besides painting as primary ability, they also used to create three-dimensional works with various media such as newsprint, wood, textiles, metal, glass, resin, stone, bone, brass, etc. 'Celebrating the Body' uses body as the framework foundation of visual narration which strung together by Fighting Cocks Group artists. Why the body? Body, mentioned by philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty as être-au-monde, is a mode of human's being in this universe. It is an important aspect for human, both biologically, because body supports human life, as well as philosophically, as a medium to touch with the world and to realize itself. Through their body, human express their existence, because with his/her body, he/she is known as subject. With his/her body, human surpass history exam, which neatly stored in his/her sensory organs of the body. Then each artists change this body discourse according to their own point of view. Multazam ‘Zam’ Kamil interpret body as the expression medium of human soul. He appoints body’s silhouette visually with dynamic movements that combine with human daily poetic moment. Whereas, Nurul ‘Acil’ Hayat picks group of masculine bodies with an expressionless face, bare naked, and colourful bald head. That group of bodies is always in the pose of chasing, jumping, picking “something” as the visual narration of human desire to compete at all times. Human figures in group are also picked by Priyaris Munandar but with meditative monumental nuance. Meanwhile, Moch Basori interprets body not as its bodily. According to Basori, body is the essence, while the meaning which follows it may be present in any form. 'Celebrating the Body' explores the works of two and three dimensions. In this multi media project, Beatriz Mousinho - who is presents as a part of Ubud Writers and Reader Festival- explores cultural and personal diversity. Poetry is used to go beyond the formless emotion and given another shape by new individuals, with enriched blended emotions. Based in Lisbon, Portugal, Beatriz has also been exploring other forms of expression, having studied fine art and contemporary jewellery.
Let’s celebrate the body!

This dream world is a peaceful place because all beings have reached
a state of perfect balance with each other and their surrounding.
Everything is in its predetermined place. Far beyond cultural- or civil imprinting
there aren´t any common assessment criteria that could be threatening harmony.
In this value-free paradise like system, every single thing
is celebrating itself as an equal part of the whole, renders homage to live itself,
to existence. In this place categories such as god and bad don’t count any more
, just as time or beauty.

Gaya Art Space proudly presents Alex Valenzuela, on his solo exhibition PUTRI NAGA KOMODO Paintings and Drawings at Gaya Art Space from March 11th through April 11th, 2011.
Alex Valenzuela was born in 1979 Manhattan, New York. He studied illustration and graphic design at the Academy of Art College San Francisco. After his studies in 2002 he went travelling and working through Bali, Tokyo, New York, Buenos Aires, Barcelona, London and decided his heart and inspiration resided in Bali.
This collection is inspired by the people of Komodo National Park in Eastern Indonesia, and their oral traditions, which are represented in the book The Dragon Princess of Komodo & Other Folktales. Alex visited Komodo and immersed himself in the culture to ensure that he really caught the spirit of these peoples in an authentic way. Proceeds from sales of the book, a lavishly illustrated collection of six traditional tales, go to support grass roots community projects in the park. After returning to Bali he discovered not to simply enter the storytelling, cautionary tales, and fables, but also go into the realm of romantic dreams, animal magic, bewitching tribulations and untold wonder.
The show will also presents a performance art of Eugenia Carnevali ( Teatro san Martin / French Alliance) as Putri Naga Komodo and Susan Allen & Susiawan (Me and My Shadows) Komodo Storytelling and Music.
