Kali Yuga Time

18 March 2006
Mask Dance Teatre by Tuju Taksu

Tuju Taksu, an innovative mask dance troupe, performs ?Kali Yuga Time? at Gaya Fusion Artspace; March 18 at 8 pm. Tuju Taksu created this new work in Bali in collaboration with an international group of performers, using mask improvisation to create powerful new theatre. Gaya Fusion Artspace is the leading contemporary artspace in Bali. An additional performance will be held at Geoks, Singgapadu, Bali, March 20 at 8 pm.

The highly original masks of this contemporary dance troupe are the result of a ten-year collaboration between Balinese master maker Ida Bagus Oka and American choreographer Maru Matthaei. Tuju Taksu means aiming (tuju) for a certain spiritual inspiration (taksu).

Performers come from Indonesia, America, Germany and Greece, and include I Nyoman Sura, Monika Fries, William Witter, Oded Carmi, Angelos Michelis, Gede Parwata and director Maru Matthaei.

In the past ten years Tuju Taksu has performed both in Bali and San Francisco, California, with dancers from different nationalities and cultures adding depth to the universal themes and story lines dealt with in the performed dramas. Since all the pieces contain improvisation, each performer brings an individual interpretation to the piece, so each performance is unique. New masks have led to different dances and characters, adding new life to each show. New masks will be seen for the first time at this premiere. Prepare for an evening of unusual, evocative entertainment.

Admission is Rps 60,000 at Gaya Fusion Artspace, and fund raising will be held during the event for Yayasan Senyum, helping children with cranio-facial problems.
