?The true journey is neither acquiescence nor escape, it is an evolution.? ?Cirlot
The making of new work, the forging of new ideas is always a test of the self. Who are you? What do you believe in? The paintings in this exhibition start with a murder in a swamp and end with a rainbow. Together they are a gathering of symbols in process, to tell a story. The paintings are made in layers that both conceal and reveal meaning. Delta Dawn, the title of the show, refers to two things: A woman in mid-life is lost in a kind of sweet madness. She is a character in a 1970s country song from the American South. It also refers to the delta of a river?the opening of a river to the ocean at dawn, symbolically referring to a terrifying but exhilarating encounter, and the beginning of a journey.
Michelle Swayne is a New York born artist who lives in Bali. Here, her art is evolving out of and into abstraction. From her studio in the middle of a rice field, not so far from Gaya Art Space, she makes up an Ocean by 7 panels of 60 x 40 cm. And the Polkadot Murder is describing a murder in a swamp. Not less than 10 paintings will be shown together to talk about rainbow, love, and murder .
